STEAMGARD® Technology/Summary

Major midwest soybean processor reduces steam consumption money saving 9.9% and earns cost-effective six-month payback.

Working with a major Midwest soybean-processing mill, we established three objectives:

  • Optimize condensate flow
  • Maximize thermal efficiency
  • Eliminate losses through conventional steam traps

Before and after the project, plant operation was monitored to determine actual plant savings/process improvements. All project goals were achieved by reviewing and evaluating existing operating conditions and providing a turnkey project engineered to the facility's specific needs.

All conventional steam traps were replaced with THE STEAMGARD SYSTEM®. Project payback was 0.45 years; overall steam consumption was reduced 9.9%.

STEAMGARD® Technology/Results

Our work included a comprehensive audit, engineering analysis and recommendations, followed by STEAMGARD® installation:
  • Production: 1.41% higher
  • Raw bean temperature: 9.3% lower
  • 24% more water evaporated
  • 30% less Btus consumed per pound of water evaporated
  • Evaporation performed by utilizing 30% less heating area
  • Increased thermal efficiency of Dryer/Cooler steam coolers by 56%
  • Reduced temperature in condensate return tank by 8%
  • Reduced flash steam in condensate return tank by 1.5 OR 2.5%
  • Reduced DT steam consumption by 2.8%
  • Reduced overall steam consumption in Extraction by 0.25 lb per bushel of beans processed
  • Reduced steam consumption by 8.6%
  • Reduced total steam consumed per bushel crushed by 9.9%
  • Lowered extraction condensate return tank temperature and pressure by 16% and 80%, respectively
