STEAMGARD® Technology/Paper Manufacturing

STEAMGARD® has helped paper companies at facilities in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America solve steam-related problems related to start-up and consistent production.

Often, the use of multiple flash tanks and steam pressures on steam-heated cylinders creates a nightmare of piping, while more efficient heat transfer by using THE STEAMGARD SYSTEM® enhances control of the unbound water percentage in the product.

Major paper mill reduces production costs, virtually eliminates maintenance expense, gains payback in less than four months

STEAMGARD® Technology/Summary

Our original project, to convert paper machines only, was expanded to the entire plant on the basis of initial and positive results. The firm's goal was to eliminate downtime associated with random mechanical steam trap failures, time-consuming maintenance programs and to reduce steam usage.

STEAMGARD® Technology/Results

After three months of operation, the mill's plant engineers reported:

  • Temperature rise on the dryer averaged 24.70° F, as measured every foot of face surface
  • Temperature rise on the after-dryers averaged 11.75° F as measured at each of 20 after-dryers
  • Machine speed increased 4.8% from 1639 FPM to 1718 FPM
  • Working area increased because STEAMGARD® assemblies require about 20% of the area occupied by traditional mechanical steam traps
  • Plant makeup water requirements reduced at least 12%
  • Cost of producing paper reduced by $12-$18 a ton, depending on paper grade
  • With no moving parts to fail over time, maintenance expense has been minimized
  • Payback associated with project steam savings (besides savings associated with production and maintenance): less than four months
