Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Retrofitted over 1200 conventional steam traps throughout the Boiler Plant, Hospital, Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NSAB) buildings, Uniformed Services University (USU), and Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute (AFRRI) facilities with more efficient STEAMGARD Venturi steam traps in partnership with ConEdison Solutions.

  • Project Payback – Less than 1.7 years (ROI)

  • Greenhouse (GHG) Reduction – 2,611 metric ton/yr (after Phase 3 Retrofit)

  • Annual Energy Savings Realized: 492,430 Therms (after Phase 3 Retrofit)

  • Annual Energy Savings of 49 billion BTU and 2.2 million gallons of potable water.

  • A 10-year performance warranty for THE STEAMGARD SYSTEM was provided.

  • The water hammer problems related to the mechanical steam trap failures and open bypass valves were eliminated from several locations.

  • 15 PSIG of backpressure was eliminated at the USU facilities.

  • The safety and reliability of the Medical Center’s steam systems were improved.

  • The project's leadership was awarded the 2016 Federal Energy & Water Management Award due to the energy savings achieved from the successful implementation of Steamgard technology (Venturi steam traps).

  • Numerous repairs were made to the Medical Center’s steam system design by SG during the STEAMGARD installation and follow-up maintenance site visits.

  • The expertise of SG’s Installation Team continues to be valuable in solving steam system problems and increasing the efficiency of the Medical Center’s steam delivery systems and the equipment that utilizes steam.

  • Facility Training and Operation & Maintenance Manuals were provided to aid in the performance of preventive maintenance of the steam traps.
